The simulation was structured as follows. First, a thermomechanical model predicted plunge depth, maximal temperature, contact forces and strains for 1-second-long process. Second, a thermal model predicted the complete thermal cycle and dimensions of heat affected zones after 6 seconds of processing and subsequent 4 seconds of air-cooling.
