One way to reduce emissions is to lower travel speed and thus fuel consumption. To enable this with timetable compliance, the reduction of port laytime is required. Based on a published approach describing the simulation-based occupancy planning for Roll on Roll off ferries, this paper presents the validation and possible applications of the tool. Using over 300 experiments, the optimal loading strategy, the shortened port laytime and thus the potential for emission savings for the expected departure is determined. The use as a real-time, operational assistance system is presented.

Keywords: Port Planning; Logistics Simulation; Digital Assistance Tool; Operation Optimization; Emission Reduction

Video presentation

Presenting author

Name:

Affiliation:

Email:

Steffen Klink

Fraunhofer Institute for Large Structures in Production Engineering, Germany

steffen.klink@igp.fraunhofer.de

by Cynthia Hoppe, Steffen Klink, Florian Beuss, Jan Sender, Wilko Fluegge (Germany) Abstract Due to the increase in maritime traffic, shipping is gaining impact on the climate.
